Yiddish Overview

Yiddish (means "Jewish") is a Germanic language written with the Hebrew alphabet. It originated about the 10th century in central and eastern Europe. It spread to other continents via emigration. It is related to Middle High German. The term Yiddish became common in the 18th century.  It became the dominant spoken language of eastern European Jews for much of its history. Eastern Yiddish differed from Western Yiddish in the extensive inclusion of Slavic words.

Prior to World War II, it is estimated that there were 12 million Yiddish speakers. This number dropped dramatically after the destruction of Jewish communities during the Holocaust. Assimilation took a further toll following the war. .

The number of Yiddish speakers today vary dramatically. The estimate runs from 500,000 to two million.  One third of these live in the United States.
